The symbol on Gaara’s forehead is the Japanese kanji 「愛」 (ai), which means “love.”
But its meaning for Gaara is much darker than ordinary love.
Gaara was raised believing that nobody could love him. His childhood was extremely lonely and traumatic. People feared him because he carried the One-Tail, Shukaku, inside him.
After being rejected and betrayed repeatedly, Gaara came to believe:
“I love only myself.”
